A Long Way from Heaven

By Max Wrench, year 7, Elizabeth College

I have absolutely no idea where I am or what I'm doing.

This place kind of looks like my childhood town, but it’s deserted, and everything is rundown. I do know that this place isn’t real, cause my old teddy bear, Hambo, is walking around with me and talking. This can’t be happening for real. Everything’s on fire. This place is horrifying.

“Hey look! It’s Disney world!” squeaks Hambo.

“And my boy Donald duck,” I say instinctively.

I love Donald Duck. He’s the coolest guy ever. But who’s that guy with the axe? Oh God, he’s going for Donald. Oh, no….

Donald duck squealed as he was dying. This was his last quack.

God dammit. Why would anyone do this? I’m so annoyed at this guy. I hear loud thunder in the distance. Pieces of what I used to love fall to the ground, like memories, being buried by the sands of time. My hypothesis is that the sadder I get, the more the world crumbles. Ok, sure, why not.

“Look, I’ll give you whatever you want, just get me the hell out of here. Anything at all… anything!” I cried up to the heavens, hoping that someone up there was up there, watching (and enjoying) my pain.

We’re heading back towards the town.

“Cows,” I point out to Hambo, expecting him to reply. Nothing. I look back and I see him on fire. I quickly sprint back to him, holding him in my arms.

“I can’t lose you….. You can’t die,” I managed to spit out.

“I’m….. sorry,” Hambo said, almost laughing.

I then realised what was going on, this place is trying to make me sad. I started to laugh along. Everything fades to black. Am I dying? Whatever happens, I don’t care, I'm happy now.
